Summer is in full swing!  So, what does this mean for all the avid runners out there? It means now is the time to stay safe and pay close attention to the heat while running outdoors. Here we offer tips on how to do just that.

Tip #1: Stay hydrated.

Staying hydrated is by far the most important thing you can do to stay safe during extreme heat, so drink plenty of water throughout the day every day!  Before every run, take down several ounces of water, and bring a bottle of water with you so you can rehydrate as you go. Refrain from drinking alcohol, soda, and coffee since those beverages dehydrate the body. Sports drinks are OK and have electrolytes that can also keep you hydrated, but water is best.

Tip #2: Protect yourself from the sun. 

The sun is so intense that it can penetrate your skin even if you run in the shade! So, no matter what the weather conditions are (or if you run under a bunch of trees!), it is important to protect yourself from the sun. Not only should you apply sweat-proof sunscreen, but you should also wear the right gear including sunglasses, a hat, and moisture wick clothing.

Tip #3: Don’t go for a PR. 

Cut yourself some slack this summer, because no matter how much you train, the heat will increase your average pace. In fact, temperatures above just 60 degrees can slow your pace by up to 30 seconds per mile for every five-degree increase! So instead of speedwork, focus on endurance training by running at a slower pace but longer distance.

Tip #4: Take excellent care of your body. 

Your body is your temple, so take good care of it! This is especially the case for runners! Why?
