Tightness in your neck and shoulders, frequent headaches, difficulty raising your arms above your head…you may be blaming this pain and discomfort on your last workout, but believe it or not, it could also be the result of poor posture! In fact, when your posture is off, it can lead to a slew of other health issues. Here we touch on different ways you can improve your posture and how a chiropractor can help you along the way.

The Importance of Posture

Posture is the way we position ourselves while standing upright or sitting down, and it has a direct correlation with our overall health and wellness. The problem is that most of us do not practice good posture (We’re guilty too!). We slouch as we walk, we hunch over our computers, and we’re constantly looking down at our cell phones. As a result, our muscles become used to being in these positions, thus making it more and more difficult to correct our posture. So, what does this mean? To improve your mental and physical health, you must also improve your posture. Here’s how you get it done.

Stand tall and keep your shoulders back. We all know we should do it, but we don’t always remember. In addition, it may be uncomfortable to keep your shoulders back since your muscles have already been tightened and “trained” to not move that way. However, forcing to keep your shoulders back is an effective way to improve your posture, and over time, your body will eventually become used to this position.

Stretch regularly. Another easy way to improve your posture is by stretching regularly throughout the day. There are tons of stretches you can that will get your body moving and keep your muscles limber, both of which will help you to stand tall and keep your shoulders back.

Work on your lifting technique. Proper lifting techniques are crucial to maintaining good posture! To accomplish this, make sure the weights are not too heavy, keep your feet flat on the floor, slowly lift the weights by straightening your hips and knees (Keep the knees soft.), and avoid engaging your back as you lift.

Visit a chiropractor. If maintaining correct posture is still a struggle, consider booking an appointment with a chiropractor. Dr. Samuel Richards of Burghealth Chiropractic and Wellness is highly trained in manual manipulation of the musculoskeletal structure and can help correct your posture issues.
